Just because you’re a student or have limited work experience doesn’t mean you don’t have content for your Pointe Profile®. There are plenty of activities you’ve participated in that contributed to your personal and professional growth that would benefit an organization.
In an interview, questions you’re asked that are not always specified in the context of “work” can be applied to your personal or professional experience. For example, if the question is, “tell me about a time when you failed, what did you learn?” This doesn’t mean you have to have work experience where you failed and learned. Another example may be if the question is, “Think about a time in your life when you failed and learned something and translate that into how your ability to fail at something and learn from it will benefit you on the job you want.”
Even a life experience such as grief or loss can translate into your ability to pick yourself up and keep moving forward. Your ability to handle stress and reestablish your momentum applies to work…be it death, a lost project, or something else. You have experienced all of the emotional effects of loss, but within the experience, you must decide to continue and develop. You choose what methods or processes will help you continue moving forward and then take action and do it. You’re taking a life experience and turning it into a work-related competency.
Where You Gain Experience:
- Life Experience
- Internships
- Fellowships
- Volunteer Activities
- Student Body Council
- Greek Council
- Church Committees and Activities
- Extracurricular Activities
- School Clubs & Associations
- Entrepreneurial endeavors
- Hobbies
Each of these activities will present goals, aspirations, challenges/problems, results, resolutions, and knowledge gained/experienced, which you want to express in your interview. Remember you also have the Experience and Insights tabs in your Pointe Profile® to add multimedia and tell your story further; it doesn’t ALL have to be in the interview.
The key to showcasing your experience and skill is knowing how these activities contributed to your growth and applying to the job you want.
